Our Vision

Develop quality affordable housing in mixed-income communities to create economic, educational, and employment opportunities leading to self-sufficiency.

Fort Worth Housing Authority History

The Fort Worth Housing Authority (FWHA) develops, owns and operates housing for low-income families who cannot afford housing offered in the private market.

Established in 1938, the Fort Worth Housing Authority was created by the City of Fort Worth in accordance with enabling legislation enacted through the State of Texas Housing Authorities Law. The Authority is a public body, corporate and political, and governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners. The Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor for two-year terms and may be reappointed. In July 1993, the Texas Legislature passed HB 1457, which requires that one of the five Commissioners be a resident of public housing. The Resident Commissioner may not be reappointed to successive terms.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funding for housing programs and for some supportive services provided by FWHA. Tenant rents and a monthly operating subsidy are utilized to operate the public housing program. HUD provides funding to improve public housing and correct property deficiencies. HUD also offers funds for the payment of rental assistance on behalf of eligible families under the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program.
